Better luck next time.
That’s the thought likely on many people’s minds, knowing that a single winning ticket sold in California matched all six numbers from the Wednesday night drawing of Powerball and won its second-highest jackpot of all time — $1.765 billion.
The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), which runs Powerball, said the winning numbers were 22-24-40-52-64, and the red Powerball was 10. MUSL said the Power Play multiplier was 2X.
MUSL did not say where the winning ticket was sold, but the Associated Press reported Thursday that it was sold at Midway Market & Liquor, a liquor store in Frazier Park — a small community in the San Emigdio Mountains.

“That’s the most exciting news ever [to] happen to Frazier Park,” store co-owner Nidal Khalil told the AP.
State law prohibits the winner from remaining anonymous, but the winner has not come forward yet.

It’s the first time in the multi-state lottery’s history that it awarded back-to-back grand prizes of more than $1 billion. A single winning ticket worth $1.08 billion was sold in California on July 19.
The current Powerball jackpot has been growing ever since. It became the fourth-highest jackpot on September 24, cleared the $1 billion mark just before the drawing on October 1, and was the third-highest jackpot overall on October 3 ($1.2 billion).
Grand prize winners can claim their winnings in one lump sum or through an annuity paid over a 29-year period. Wednesday’s jackpot has a cash value of $774.1 million.
“Congratulations to the newest Powerball billionaire and the millions of Powerball players who won other cash prizes in last night’s drawing,” Drew Svitko, Powerball Product Group Chair, and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director, said in a statement.
“For 31 years, some players who have dreamed about winning a Powerball jackpot have defied the odds and, in doing so, have helped generate critical funding for public services and programs supported by US lotteries. If you bought a Powerball ticket during this jackpot run, please know that a portion of that ticket will stay in your home state to make it a better place to live.”
Powerball is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Someone from California has won at least a share of the current top four Powerball jackpots of all time — with two winning tickets drawn this year, plus one each in 2016 and 2022. The winning ticket for the ninth-highest Powerball jackpot in October 2021 was also sold in California.
Wednesday’s win comes nearly one year to the date that the highest-ever Powerball jackpot was awarded. A winning ticket worth $2.04 billion was sold at a gas station and repair shop in Altadena on November 7, 2022.
The odds of winning the grand prize are 1-in-292.2 million. The overall odds of winning a prize in Powerball are 1-in-24.9.
