Land-Based Casinos

When it comes to online gambling, no state is as synonymous with the practice as New Jersey. In fact, the Garden State led the charge to legalize online gambling nationwide and won a hard-fought victory that resulted in online gambling being legalized in the state in 2013.

New Jersey was one of the first states to offer both regulated online casinos and sports betting, with Gov. Chris Christie signing bills to legalize online casinos and sports betting within a five-year span. Today, the state is home to more than two dozen online casino operators, all of which are partnered with land-based casinos.

Of course, other than Nevada, New Jersey is home to the biggest number of live gambling venues, with Atlantic City often referred to as America’s Playground. As such, the state is able to offer many online casino and sports betting licenses, which international casino operators took full advantage of.

If you are looking to find out more about legal online gambling in New Jersey and your betting and casino game options, keep reading and find out which operators are available and how you can access them. This full guide to NJ online gambling will be all you need to get involved with the top online gambling sites in the state.

Types of Legal Online Gambling Available in New Jersey

Looking over all the online gambling options for the residents and visitors of New Jersey, it is hard to imagine a better selection they could have. Here is a quick rundown of the regulated iGaming options you will have if you live in New Jersey.

Legal Online Casinos

Online casinos are the most dominant form of legal gambling in the Garden State, as more than two dozen operators have the license to offer casino games over the internet. To get their licenses, online casino operators must partner with a live casino in Atlantic City, which many major international companies jumped at the opportunity of doing.

Each online casino app in New Jersey offers dozens of different casino games, including a vast selection of video slots and casino table games such as blackjack, roulette, baccarat, video poker, and much more.

Online casino games became legal in NJ back in 2013 when Gov. Chris Christie signed Assembly Bill 2578 into law. Online casino gaming and online poker are both regulated. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE) was put in charge of issuing licenses for such operators.

Online Poker Sites

When it comes to online poker, no state in the US has as many legal operators or as much poker action as New Jersey. Major poker sites such as PokerStars and WSOP.com operate in NJ and offer massive poker tournaments, ample cash game action, and much more.

Online poker was legalized in NJ by the same bill that legalized online casino games, and the scope of online poker in the state has only expanded since. Today, NJ is the frontrunner in online poker in the US, and one of the states pushing for interstate poker regulation that would allow players from all the states to play together on the same poker sites.

Online Sports Betting

Sports betting is yet another form of online sports betting that New Jersey pushed hard for and managed to get legalized. Back in 2018, NJ led the legal battle to get PASPA, the law that was making sports betting illegal, repealed. When the Supreme Court repealed the law, NJ soon launched its first retail and legal sportsbooks, becoming the first state outside of Nevada to do so.

Another legislative decision that Gov. Chris Christie was to legalize daily fantasy sports (DFS) in 2017. Since then, all sports fans in NJ have a chance to participate in DFS competitions with a number of trusted and regulated operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel, which lead the DFS markets internationally.

Important Information When Choosing an Online Gambling Site in New Jersey

With such a wide selection of online gambling sites with a license, players in New Jersey get to pick and choose, a privilege not everyone in the US has. For that reason, players should be looking to capitalize on the various bonuses and promotions that bring extra value, along with choosing the sites that offer the highest degree of usability and high-quality platforms.

New Jersey Online Gambling Welcome Bonuses

Whether you are looking to play casino games, online poker, or bet on sports, New Jersey gives you plenty of options in terms of operators you can play with. All legal and regulated NJ online gambling sites offer valuable welcome bonuses, and these will significantly boost your bankroll and your chances to come out as a winner.

An online gambling welcome bonus is given to players when they make their first deposit, with the amount usually being the same as the deposit. For instance, if you deposit $100 into your NJ online gambling balance, your operator will double the amount, giving you a chance to gamble with $200 in total. These bonuses are transparent and come with a few simple rules, but if you claim them from legal gambling sites, you will be set for success.

Gambling Promotions in New Jersey

While new players can look forward to their welcome bonuses, those who have been playing with a certain operator for a while can still benefit greatly from the various promotions that they tend to run. The top legal online casinos and sportsbooks in New Jersey run valuable promotions all the time, and they can be used by any player at the site.

Promotions you can get in NJ include free bets, free spins at slot games, reload bonuses, and much more. If you are looking for the best sites in the state, you might want to look at how much value they give away through their promotional programs.

New Jersey Customer Loyalty Programs

The promotions that operators run from time to time are ideal for casual players, but those looking to gamble it up for high stakes and really get in the action benefit the most from customer loyalty programs and VIP schemes.

These programs give off some real value to players who make large deposits and play games at high levels, because they tend to give back a percentage of the money wagered in all games over time. This means you could be looking at hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in cashback, along with a variety of player rewards and perks that come from being a VIP at a legal NJ casino or betting site.

Mobile Gambling in New Jersey

Ever since online gambling was made legal in New Jersey, mobile devices have been dominant over desktop computers in terms of how much people use them to access their favourite platforms. Today, all major NJ online gambling operators offer mobile apps for iOS and Android powered devices, either in a downloadable or instant play form.

Game Selection and Navigation

While online gambling in some of the other states is relatively limited, New Jersey offers plenty of variety and choice to its players. This is why players get to pick and choose which operator to play with based on their game selection and the quality of the platform as well.

When it comes to game selection, casino players can select between hundreds of different slot machines, a variety of table games, and live dealer options. Since each operator offers a different portfolio, this is a big part of what makes one online casino better than the other.

Same goes for online poker sites as well, as some of the major sites in NJ offer a greater choice of online poker tournaments and cash games than others, along with better and more usable platforms. Top poker apps in NJ offer the same experience as those in Europe and rest of the world, which makes them an easy choice for all NJ poker players.

New Jersey is home to a bigger number of online gambling operators than any other state in the US. Considering this, there is hardly any reason to play on any unregulated site, but many unlicensed offshore operators still offer their services to the residents of the Garden State. Yet, playing at licensed casinos and sportsbooks comes with a great number of advantages.

Regulated New Jersey casinos are licensed by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, which requires the operators to comply 100% with all the laws and regulations pertaining to online gambling. This means players can expect fair gameplay, random outcomes of all games, and highly responsive customer support departments.

When it comes to staying safe while gambling online, there is no better way to do so than by playing with a regulated NJ online gambling site. The operators protect all user data and finances with powerful encryptions, SSL certificates, and firewalls, which guarantee the highest level of cyber security possible in today’s world.

Regulated operators are also dedicated to the promotion of safe and responsible gambling, allowing players to self-exclude from playing if they feel like it’s becoming a problem, or limit the amounts they can deposit or wager on the sites.

Finally, playing at a regulated site means contributing money to a variety of charitable and socially useful causes, which are funded from taxes that the state of New Jersey charges from the operators within its borders.

How to Know if a New Jersey Online Gambling Site is Legal, Regulated, and Safe?

The question of safety is one of the biggest one when it comes to online gambling. To make sure you are playing with a safe and legal NJ gambling site, here is what to look at:

  • The Regulator’s Seal: The most important thing in identifying legal and licensed NJ online gambling sites is looking at licensing seals. These are usually found in the operator’s footer section across all pages. If you can find a New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement seal, it means the site is licensed by this body.
  • Running from the US: The biggest problem with unlicensed sites is that they are not even registered in the US. Working from offshore locations, such operators don’t really answer to anyone. You should be looking to play with companies with US-based headquarters, to make sure you have legal recourse should anything unexpected happen.
  • Partnered with Local Casinos: All regulated New Jersey online gambling sites come as a product of partnership between local AC casinos and international gambling companies. Partnerships with local casinos ensure you are getting treated as well as you would if you drove out to Atlantic City today.
  • Geolocation: All NJ online casinos, sportsbooks, and poker sites are obligated to keep track of their players’ geolocations through special downloadable apps. You can only play at these sites if you are within state borders, with players in other states unable to access real money play at regulated sites.
  • Big Name: While it is true that some small online casinos and poker rooms also offer a good player experience, playing with the giants of the industry comes with plenty of perks. By playing with well-known and established brands, you ensure that you are not getting cheated in any way, as these companies have too much to lose.
  • Customer Service: When playing with regulated gambling sites in New Jersey, you will have access to non-stop and high-quality customer support. Whether you want to contact the operator via phone, email, or live chat, your options should be open.
  • Loyalty Programs: Another big perk of playing with properly licensed NJ gambling sites is that they give back a lot of value. Big name online casinos and poker sites in the Garden State offer valuable VIP schemes with a lot of rewards coming your way.

New Jersey Gaming Regulator Information

We went over a number of reasons as to why playing with regulated NJ gambling sites is so important, but let’s take a quick look at how licensing in the state works in the first place. All iGaming operators who wish to legally service NJ players must acquire a gaming license from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, the state’s gaming regulator.

In order to acquire such a license, the online gambling operator must form a partnership with a casino that’s already licensed for live games in NJ. This makes playing at such online gambling sites as safe and clean-cut as playing in casinos in Atlantic City.

The biggest advantage of doing so is that you know these sites are 100% legal. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement ensures that all games run smoothly and fairly, that player funds are kept segregated from operating funds, and that the companies are running their business in accordance with all state and federal laws.

This is just one of the perks that you will not find at offshore casinos who answer to no one but themselves. What’s even more, the Division of Gaming Enforcement actually listens to players as well, and you may submit a complaint against any registered and licensed online gambling operator in NJ with them.

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement is headquartered at The Arcade Building, 1325 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, NJ 08401.

History of New Jersey Online Gambling Legislation

The history of gambling in the Garden State is a long and interesting one. Over the years, the state has been at the forefront of the battle for legal gambling across the country, and has in various eras managed to win legal battles that made gambling a more free enterprise.

The first such victory came back in 1976, when the New Jersey Casino Control Act was passed, allowing for the first legal casino outside of Nevada to be built and launched the following years. Resorts Atlantic City was the first casino outside of Nevada, and it remains in operation to this day.

New Jersey kept growing from that point on, and in the early 1990s it was a massive gambling paradise, with 12 casinos in operation, three of which were owned by future President Donald Trump, who did a lot to market AC and attract the masses in this era.

New Jersey reached its peak as a gambling getaway in 2005 and 2006, when they managed to accumulate over $5 billion in gambling revenues for the year. Since then, live gambling has done worse and worse under pressure from competitors from other states, but a switch to online gambling was another success.

In 2013, Assembly Bill 2578 was passed and signed by Gov. Chris Christie and it allowed for online casino and poker sites to launch. While only players within the state could play against each other at first, the state later entered the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, which currently allows play with players from Nevada and Delaware.

A major legal victory for New Jersey and the gambling industry came in 2018, as a lawsuit filed against the NCAA and professional sports organization was finalized. The Supreme Court found the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) to be unconstitutional and repealed the law, ending Nevada’s monopoly on sports betting.

Soon, New Jersey launched its first legal sportsbooks, and other states started bringing their own laws to regulate sports betting within their borders. However, it was New Jersey who pushed and won the battle to make sports betting legal, which bettors nationwide should be thankful for.

Responsible Gambling Resources in New Jersey

One of the biggest reasons for the existence of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement is to regulate all gambling within the state, ensure that problem gambling is being dealt with, and that responsible gambling practices are being followed.

Ever since the laws that legalize online gambling in NJ were brought into power, players have been allowed to self-exclude from play at all regulated venues, or limit their deposits, which allows those who experience problems with their gambling practices an opportunity to restrain from gambling.

What’s more, the Division and the locally regulated operators are working tirelessly on the promotion of responsible gambling and reduction of problem gambling. Players who believe they have a problem with gambling or their families can contact the following 24/7 helpline:
